Archives Purpose, Services, and Collections Use

Purpose
The Saint Michael’s College Archives Department is located in the Durick Library.  It is the designated repository for official records of Saint Michael’s College.  The Department also serves as the official repository for records from the Society of Saint Edmund

The Saint Michael's College Archives was established in 1972.   The collection includes official records and manuscripts; student records; College publications; administrative papers; video and audio recordings; microfilm; and photographs relating to the history of the College. 

The Society of Saint Edmund Archives was established in 1974.  In 1995, the Archives were transferred to Durick Library, where they are administered as an independent collection in the Archives Department.  The Society of Saint Edmund Archives includes official records from the Generalate and from both current and former apostolates of the society, as well as manuscript materials from individual members of the Society.  The collection also includes photographs and artifacts.

Services

  • Provide information services which support College personnel in the performance of their duties.
  • Support research and teaching by making available and encouraging the use of its collections by members of the college community and the public.
  • Promote knowledge and understanding of the origins, aims, programs and goals of the College and the Society of Saint Edmund.
  • Provide records management and adequate facilities and staff for the retention, organization, preservation, and retrieval of such records.

Rules for Use
It is the responsibility of the researcher to assist in the preservation of archival materials. Appropriate care should be exercised to ensure that future generations of researchers will have access to these materials.  Visitors are therefore requested to observe the following guidelines:

  • Users to the archives must fill out a Researcher Registration form if they have not done so before.  All users must sign the Log Sheet before they will be permitted access to materials.

  • The Archives is a closed stack area.  Requested materials are brought to researchers by Archives staff.  Access to some materials may be restricted by law or by agreement with the donor.  No material in the Archives may be removed from the research area without approval from an Archives staff member.  

  • Use pencils for note taking.  No ink of any kind may be used in the research area. Computers may be brought into the archives and used at the discretion of the Archives staff.
    Briefcases and book bags are not permitted in the research area.  Please take only what you need for note taking.

  • Food and beverages are not permitted in the Archives Department.
    Researchers are asked to handle materials with clean hands; the staff will provide gloves to be worn when handling photographs and other fragile materials.

  • All archival materials must be handled carefully. Use only one folder at a time and keep the papers in their existing order. Do not place books or volumes face down.

  • Photocopying is subject to approval by a member of the Archives staff.  Copies may be denied because of condition of material or because of copyright or other considerations.
