The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) operation allows for the cooperative exchange of resources owned by various institutions. The Saint Michael's College Library currently participates in the state-wide Vermont Automated Library System (VALS), the international OCLC ILL subsystem, and the American Library Association (ALA) mail system. As members of the state and international networks of lending institutions, there are specific guidelines that must be followed to ensure our good standing with other participating institutions. Patrons will be expected to abide by these guidelines, just as they must abide by the policies governing our own library. For more rapid service everyone attempt is made to first acquire materials within Vermont and then regionally.
Borrowing libraries will make every effort to exhaust their own resources before resorting to interlibrary loans.

Following a designated search protocol, every attempt is made to acquire needed materials in-state, with UVM being the last option. If an item is not available in-state, the search is expanded nationally, and internationally, if necessary.
Who may borrow?
The ILL Office services patrons by obtaining materials not owned by the college library. Materials may only be requested by patrons who possess a MIKENET account.
Several databases offer links to ILL request forms or an online web request form is available.
Completing the Request Form
A separate form must be submitted for each item requested. Forms must be filled out completely.
There are no charges for SMC faculty, staff, or students to obtain ILL materials.
If a patron requests a dissertation that is not available in Dissertations & Theses Global, every effort will be made to obtain it through normal ILL channels. However, if it is not available, the library will provide the patron with the information on how to purchase the item from UMI's Dissertation Express.
Turn Around Time/Notification
Plan for a minimum of two (2) weeks for receipt of materials. Once materials arrive, the patron is notified by email.
Pick-up and Return of Materials
Items are left at the Circulation Desk for the patron to pick up. ILL materials will not be forwarded through the campus or U.S. mail. Materials should always be returned to the Circulation Desk.
Loan Periods and Renewals
Photocopies are the property of the patron and do not need to be returned. The due dates for books are determined by the lending institution. Renewal request must be made prior to the due date for an item. Renewals can be requested by email or calling x2590. If renewal is denied by the lending institution the patron will be asked to return the item. Renewals are always at the discretion of the lending library.
Overdue ILL materials will automatically be assessed a $1/day fine. After a month, if an item is not returned, a bill for the replacement cost of the item ($75 minimum) will be assessed. All library privileges, including access to ILL services, will be suspended until the matter is resolved.
If we are unable to borrow requested materials, or the "date needed by" expires, the request forms will be returned to the patron with the brief explanation.
Special Handling of ILL Materials
If a lending library requires that an item be used in-library only, the item will be held at the Circulation Desk and must be returned there after each use.
