Business in 10...

1. Concentrations

Saint Michael's business majors can concentrate in specific areas such as accounting, finance, international business, management and marketing. We offer a wide range of upper-level elective courses in these areas.

2. Internships

Several local businesses and organizations offer internships to our students. These opportunities allow students to gain skills in a variety of business areas, from advertising to financial planning. Internship sites include Rome Snowboards, Kelliher Samets Volk, Vermont Lake Monsters, UBS and more.

3. Sigma Beta Delta

Saint Michael's hosts a chapter of the Sigma Beta Delta Honors Society to honor outstanding academic achievement and scholarship by students studying business, management and administration. Sigma Beta Delta has more than 250 chapters nationwide. The society's principles include wisdom (Sigma), honor (Beta), and the pursuit of meaningful aspirations (Delta).

4. Study Abroad

Our department encourages students to study abroad to gain valuable knowledge and experience in the global marketplace. Each year, almost 25% of our majors study abroad.

5. Enterprise Plan Competition

Annually, our department organizes the Enterprise Plan Competition, where students prepare a business plan for a hypothetical business or nonprofit start-up. The top plans are presented before a distinguished panel of bankers, investors and entrepreneurs, with cash prizes of up to $5,000 for the winning team.

6. Business Ethics Case Competition

Each year, our students compete against college students across the region to prepare a report analyzing an actual business situation. Top teams are invited to the Saint Michael's campus to present their cases in front of a panel of business ethics experts, with cash prizes of up to $1,000 given to the top team.

7. Highly Accessible Professors

Our students frequent professors' offices for help and advice not only for courses but also for questions about the business world in general. Our professors have a variety of experience, some purely academic, and some with a mixture of academic and business experience.

8. Business Skills

Writing and presentation skills are fostered throughout the business major. Students have many chances to practice and enhance their writing and speaking abilities.

9. Speaker Series

The business department sponsors a regular speaker series aimed at giving our students the kinds of knowledge and contacts that can be useful to them once they enter the workplace. Among the speakers and events we run are an annual Chartered Financial Planner (CFA) panel, "how-to" clinics on how to be your best at a networking event or business meal, and networking events with Saint Michael's alumni.

10. MBA 4+1 Program

To provide post-graduate opportunities for students in both Business Administration and Accounting, the Department has developed a number of agreements with colleges and universities (e.g., Clarkson, Syracuse, Northeastern, Boston College) that will allow facilitated admission for our alumni into MBA and MSA programs. Contact the department chair, Dr. Robert Letovsky, for details.
