Registration for classes is handled by web programs that are accessed by the mySMC portal.
Under the Quick Links on the left side of the portal page there's a link for KnightVision.
After selecting KnightVision from the Quick Links, click on WEBADVISOR FOR STUDENTS to get to the pages related to your Academic Profile and to Registration that are referred to below.
Here are the steps for registering by KnightVision.
1. Plan Your Schedule
From the Webadvisor for Students menu, and then Academic Profile you can look at your program evaluation to see what requirements you still need to take for your degree.
And then, if you want to look at a list of classes that will be offered in an upcoming term, you can select Registration (also on the Webadvisor for Students menu), and then"Search for sections."
2. Create a List of Desired Class Sections
To register for classes at the time allowed for you – or to create a list of classes you'd like to take before it's time for you to register – click on the Register for Sections item on the Registration menu.
You will have a choice between "Search and register for sections," "Express registration" and "Register for previously selected sections" and a couple of other options. Both Express Registration and Search and Register will allow you to place classes on your preferred list.
If you know the course section number (for example, EN 110A) of the classes you think you may want to register for, Express Registration may be the quickest and most efficient way to place class sections on your preferred list. You can place as many classes as you want on the list of preferred classes. After entering the class section information click "Submit" at the bottom of the screen. The courses you've selected will be placed on your Preferred Sections List, and you will automatically be taken to a registration management screen where you can view this list and, if you are eligible to register at that time, you can complete your registration. If you will be registering later on, you can log out, and you can return to your preferred list at a later date. You can access your preferred list by choosing "Register for sections" on the Registration page, and "Register for previously selected sections" from the subsequent page.
Search and Register for Sections
Search and Register is useful if you want to look at lists of class sections offered in the various departments or if you want to see whether a class still has openings and how many. After clicking on "Search and register for sections" you'll be taken to a search page that will allow you to look up lists of classes by department, course level, days of class meetings, course title or instructor. You must enter the term or semester at the top of this page and at least one other field (usually that would be the "Subject" field). Click on the "Submit" button and you will see a list of classes based on the parameters you entered.
To choose a class to put on your Preferred Sections List, click the checkbox in the "Select" column and click on the "Submit" button at the bottom of the screen. You can select as many classes as you want to put on your list at this point. You will be taken to a registration management screen where you can view your Preferred Sections List and, if you are eligible to register at the time, you can complete your registration. If you will be registering later on, you can log out, and you can return to your preferred list at a later date. You can access your preferred list by choosing "Register for sections" on the Registration page, and "Register for previously selected sections" from the subsequent page.
3. Register from the Preferred Sections List
All course registrations in KnightVision are done from a list of class sections that you create. KnightVision-Webadvisor refers to this list as your "preferred list of sections." Please note that the preferred list of sections is only a "wish list." It does not guarantee you spaces in any of these classes. You must take further action in order to be registered for the classes you place on this list.
You may put any class you'd like on your preferred list regardless of your eligibility to enroll in the class, however, once you attempt to register for the class your eligibility will be checked. If you do not meet the class criteria (prerequisites, instructor permission, seat availability, etc) you will not be able to actually register for a class. The presence of a class on your preferred list does not indicate in any way that you will be able to register for that class.
To register for classes from your preferred list click on the "Register for Sections" option on the Registration menu, and then select "Register for previously selected sections." You will be taken to a registration management screen from which you can execute your registration.
You will have the choice of registering for all the classes on your preferred list in one action or performing various registration activities on your preferred sections one by one.
To register for all the class sections on your preferred list at once, select the action "RG-Register" from the drop-down menu at the top of the screen, "Action for ALL Pref. Sections." (You can remove all preferred sections on the list, too, by selecting the "RM - Remove from List" option.)
Near the "Submit" button at the bottom of the screen you can tell KnightVision how you want to handle your entire registration if there is a problem with one or more of the classes you selected. From the drop-down menu select...
- "If one of my choices is not available: ALL - Allow me to adjust all." (This means that if there is a registration problem with any of the classes you're trying to register for, the registration will fail for all the classes you've selected.)
- "If one of my choices is not available: PART - Complete only available." (This means that if there is a registration problem with any of the classes you're trying to register for the registration program will go ahead and process the registration for all the other classes that you've selected that you are eligible to register for.)
Click on the "Submit" button at the bottom of the screen. You will receive a message explaining any problem (class closed, time conflict, prerequisites missing, etc) for the classes you have selected.
To register for individual classes on your preferred list select "Register" from the drop-down menu next to the classes you want to register for. (You can remove preferred sections from the list, too, by selecting the "Remove from List" option). Click on the "Submit" button at the bottom of the screen.
When you have completed a registration successfully you will be presented with a results screen that confirms your registration in the classes you are registered for. Check the status of your transaction by looking at the "Status" column.
4. Making Changes to Your Schedule
After having registered for classes you may need to make some changes. To remove classes from your schedule and to add others go to Register and Drop Sections on the Registration menu. You will be taken again to the screen that contains your preferred sections list at the top; scroll down to where you see all of your currently enrolled classes (present and future semesters). Drop classes by placing a check in a box in the "Drop" column next to the course you wish to remove from your schedule. After checking the appropriate classes, click the “Submit” button.
After submitting your choices you will be taken to a Registration Results screen. Check the messages on this screen to be sure you’ve dropped the correct classes.
Some Common Problems Students Encounter When Registering
You will get a message alerting you to the nature of the problem…
You are not eligible to register at this time, usually because…
- Your advisor has not given you clearance (see your advisor).
- You are not scheduled to register on this day (check with registrar's office).
- There is a "hold" on your registration placed by the Student Accounts Office, Student Health Services, or some other office (the registration program will let you know which office to contact).
There is some problem with your enrolling in a class you have chosen…
- The class has already reached its enrollment cap (see Petition Process, below).
- You do not have one of the course prerequisites.
- Enrollment in the class requires the instructor's permission, and that permission is not on file in the registrar's office. (See instructor. S/he can sign a permission form – available at the registrar's office – or can call or e-mail the office.)
- You may not be eligible for the class you’re selecting. Examples would be graduate-level classes or classes reserved for majors.
- There may be a time conflict with two of the classes you have selected.
You are trying to register for too many credits…
- You will not be able to sign up for more than four and a half courses (18 credits) at this time.
If you register online you will not receive a printed schedule confirmation from the registrar's office. You should confirm your registration in the classes you have selected by clicking on "My Class Schedule" from the Academic Profile menu at Webadvisor for Students.
