Master's in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

For over 50 years, Saint Michael's MATESOL program has been recognized locally and internationally as a premier learning environment for prospective teachers. With a number of programs available, all at an affordable cost, studying at St. Mike’s means you’ll be experience a supportive and close-knit community.

Coming together on a beautiful campus in Vermont, our faculty and students are from all over the world. During your time in the classroom, you will discuss TESOL theory and apply what you’ve learned, before implementing your skills in schools around the world.

If you already have graduate TESOL courses completed from an approved program, you may be able to transfer up to 6 credits to the MA. TESOL certificate holders from Via Lingua, UC Irvine Extension, and Sookmyung University are eligible for advance standing according to our articulation agreements. In addition, applicants who have earned a Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) from the Cambridge English Language Assessment, part of the University of Cambridge, also are eligible for 6 credits of advanced standing.

MATESOL (36 credits) - Four semesters on campus.

MATESOL: OnLine + OnCampus (36 credits) - Two summers on campus; fall and spring online; graduate within 14 months.

Peace Corps Master's International Program (36 credits) - Earn 8 MATESOL credits while serving overseas.

MATESOL + PK-12 Licensure (46 credits) - This initial licensure program is run jointly with the Graduate Education Department.

MATESOL + PK-12 Endorsement for Licensed Teachers (36 credits) - Earn your public school ELL certification within the Master's program.

PK-12 ELL Endorsement for Licensed Teachers (18 credits)

Graduate Certificate in TESOL (24 credits) - A solid grounding in TESOL for students who do not want to commit to the full Master's program at this time.

MATESOL Pathway Program - provides language preparation for students with high-intermediate to advanced English proficiency who are conditionally admitted to the Masters in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MATESOL) program.

TESOL Summer Certificate Program - A lively four-week summer program to get you on your teaching feet and into the field. Earn three credits towards your undergraduate degree at Saint Michael's and/or six credits toward the Saint Michael's MATESOL degree on successful completion of the program and a capstone project.

Overseas Teaching Practicum

There are three options for students wishing to do GSL 688 Practicum II: Classroom Teaching abroad once they have completed the rest of their coursework : The American Language Center in Morocco, Kanazawa Technical College in Ishikawa, Japan, and Gimnasio Vermont in Bogotá, Colombia.

The American Language Center services mostly adult and young adult students, and Kanazawa Technical College is a university-based program. Students who are interested in working with children may apply for practicum with our cooperating institution, Gimnasio Vermont, a highly-respected PK-12 bilingual immersion school.
