Brazillian Poet Salgado Maranhão

salgado maranhao

Saint Michael's College presents Brazilian poet Salgado Maranhão and his translator Alexis Levitin at 7 PM in Saint Edmund's Hall Farrell Room (#315). One of Brazil's leading contemporary poets, Salgado's collected poems The Color of the Word, won that country’s highest award, and an earlier collection won another prestigious Brazilian award. His eight books of poetry include The Snake's Fists, The Kiss of the Beast, and the recent Tiger's Fur. He also writes song lyrics many of which have been recorded by Brazil's leading jazz and pop musicians. Translations of his work have appeared in numerous English language journals. One critic said of his most recent book, "a speculative intelligence and a celebration of the corporality of the world are expressed [here] with great metaphoric vigor."
