paul hines uvm professorDr. Paul Hines, UVM Assistant Professor of Engineering will speak on "Large blackouts in the power grid: Why they happen and what to do about it”, discussing the mechanisms of cascading failure in power systems, ways to simulate those mechanisms, and new technologies for mitigating cascading failure risk. Dr. Hines is also a member of the adjunct research faculty at the Carnegie Mellon Electricity Industry center. Formerly he worked at the U.S. National Energy Technology Laboratory, where he participated in smart grid research, the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, where he studied interactions between nuclear plants and grid reliability, and for two other projects addressing electricity, and substation design.
