You'll hear a lot about service at Saint Michael's - our students give their time and talents in countless ways. It's the best example of how we live our mission. As one student says, "We do so much volunteering that we don't even think of it as volunteering. It's just who we are at St. Mike's."
Service-learning is a credit-bearing, educational experience in which students, as part of an academic course, participate in a thoughtfully organized service activity that meets identified community needs. Students reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility.
Service-learning is different from community service (though St. Mike's students are practically professional volunteers). Unlike co-curricular volunteer activities, service-learning programs involve students in organized community service that corresponds to the academic content of a specific course. A variety of courses at St. Mike's have a service-learning component.
AmeriCorps & The Service-Learning Scholars Program
As an active college student, you are helping to build a better world - and AmeriCorps wants to support you! With the Student Service Leadership Corps, you have the opportunity to earn up to $2,362 toward your education for committing yourself to a specified term of service. Corps members on campus either work for the Fire and Rescue Squad or the Service-Learning Program, in addition to the other great activities they may do through MOVE, or on their own.
Students enrolled through the Service-Learning Program will join the Service-Learning Scholars Program. Designed to provide additional support for faculty members and community partners engaged in service-learning projects, the Scholars Program trains students in the pedagogy, and places them in leadership opportunities on campus and in the community.
This year's recipients, who have dedicated themselves to a total of 5,700 hours of service, will be receiving a combined total of over $15,000 in Education Awards!
