Christine Bauer-Ramazani, instructor of applied linguistics, was invited to give a keynote address in Bogota, Colombia, on "Technology and Its Impact on Teaching and Learning" at the Colombo Symposium: ELT Practices that Matter, at the Centro Colombo Americano Bogota, September 17-18, 2012.

James M. Byrne, professor of religious studies and department chair, has an entry on "Deism" forthcoming in Volume 6 of The Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception (Berlin: deGruyter, 2013).

Greg Delanty, professor of English, recently had another book, The Greek Anthology Book XVII, published by Carcanet in the United Kingdom.

Mike Donoghue, longtime adjunct professor in the media studies, journalism and digital arts spoke at the annual national convention for Investigative Reporters and Editors in Boston about seeking successful ways to obtain public records from unwilling federal, state and local government officials.

William Lee Ellis and Nathaniel G. Lew, assistant professor and associate professor, respectively, of fine arts/music, both attended the joint meeting of the Society for Ethnomusicology, the American Musicological Society, and the Society for Music Theory in New Orleans on Nov 1-4.

Jo Ellis-Monaghan, professor of mathematics, will make a presentation, "The Shapes of Sea Shells: Mathematical Beauty in the Natural World," at the Advancement of Science (AAAS) 2013 Annual Meeting in Boston on February 15, 2013.

Valerie Hird, adjunct professor of fine arts/art, was granted a residency at The Studios of Key West in Key West, FL for the month of January, 2013. She will also be exhibiting the digital version and original artwork from The Maiden Voyages Project at the Center for Books Arts in NYC in April 2013. Then she'll leave the U.S. to work with colleagues at NYU's Adu Dhabi campus and travel in Oman for a month.

Terryl Kinder, distinguished visiting professor in fine arts, was to participate in presentations both days of the Nov. 9-10 colloquium "Sacred Spaces, Sacred Places: Religious Architecture and Sites," sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council at Stoweflake Mountain Resort and Spa in Stowe, VT. Here's how the council's publicity describes the program: "Sacred buildings and sites offer us ways to enter into and better understand the cultures that sanctify them - from Gothic cathedrals to Muslim shrines, from Buddhist and Hindu temples to New England meetinghouses and American churches. Compelling in their own right, these buildings are also visible signifiers of spiritual beliefs and practices. How do they manifest the values of the cultures that sanctify them? What do they have in common? Join us at the Vermont Humanities Council's 39th annual fall conference to examine these places and the beliefs and values they embody." Terryl also will present a campus program in honor of on the Feast of Saint Edmund, November 16, titled "Clothes Make the Man (or, How to Dress a Saint): The Sartorial Dilemma of Edmund of Canterbury," in Alliot Hall's Vermont Room at noon.

Joseph Kroger, professor of religious studies, is co-author of a new book, Aztec Goddesses and Christian Madonnas: Images of the Divine Feminine in Mexico. (publisher: Ashgate, October 2012).

Susan Kuntz, professor of psychology, and Carey Kaplan, professor of English, presented a paper, "Life Narrative and Intergenerational Pedagogy" at the 2nd Global Conference, "Storytelling:  Global Reflections on Narrative," in Salzburg, Austria, on November 7, 2012.

David Mindich, professor of media studies, journalism and digital arts, on November 5 delivered the keynote for the third annual Public Service Week at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

Patrick Standen, instructor of philosophy, on October 20 delivered a presentation, "MS and Adaptive Sports," at the Greater New England Regional MS Conference in Essex, VT.

Staff Career News

Kellie Campbell, manager of the Language Learning Resource Center at the Technology Learning Center of the Information Technology Department, and Sean Dailey (English Language Programs at the college), on October 11 presented at the New England Regional Association for Language Learning Technology conference at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.  Their two-hour hands-on workshop focused on how iPads and other mobile tools can be used to enhance language learning. Kellie and Sean worked together this past summer to identify beneficial uses and develop a process and support model for integrating these mobile tools into the classroom. 

Joan Wagner, director of community-engaged learning, and Kaitlyn Newdorf '13 co-presented "Fix it with Five: A Socially Responsible Model of Student Philanthropy" at the 2nd Annual Eastern Region Campus Compact Conference, Dartmouth College, October 2012.

Erik Wells '09, communications & research manager for the Vermont Local Roads Program at Saint Michael's college, completed his Master of Public Administration (MPA) at the University of Vermont in May 2012. Erik was honored at graduation with the Marshall E. Dimock Student Award, the top honor in his graduating class for scholarly achievement.
