In December of 2012, Saint Michael's announced The Thomas F. Shields ’52 Challenge for Student Scholarships. Mr. Shields promised to match each of the first 100 gifts made of $1,000 or more for financial aid with his own gift of $1,000, for a total personal commitment of $100,000.
Just three short months later, thanks to the vigorous and generous response of alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and other friends of Saint Michael's, we have met the challenge! Together, these donors have contributed a total of $202,400 in student scholarship aid. When you factor in Tom's launching commitment of $100,000 in, it brings the total to more than $300,000!
"Saint Michael's must go the extra mile to help students get the education they desire and the scholarship aid they need,” commented Jerry Flanagan, Vice President for Admission and Enrollment Management. "Thanks to Tom's generous matching challenge and a strong and swift response from St. Mike's supporters, we can do more, student by student."
Saint Michael's extends its deep and sincere gratitude to Tom Shields and each and every contributor who helped to make the Shields Challenge a success!
