Employees sign up to volunteer for the 4th annual Community Service Day

community service daySchool's out, but employees are working hard cleaning, painting, raking, gardening, planting and more. The fourth annual Saint Michael's College Community Service Day has drawn some 116 employees into volunteering to do a variety of service activities for the day, Wednesday, May 15, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, both on and off the college campus. Participants were encouraged to join in "the opportunity to come together with your colleagues and to give back to your community."

President John J. Neuhauser will speak at the celebratory lunch in the Alliot Student Center Green Mountain Dining Room at 12:30 p.m. following the morning of volunteering.

Participants, including vice presidents, cafeteria workers, computer specialists, librarians, professors and others, will be doing the following activities:

On Campus:

  • Residence Halls:  power-washing, painting, cleaning to prepare for rapid turnaround time of dorm space. So far 30 people have signed up to clean out student rooms, sorting anything left that can be given to the Salvation Army, or recycled.
  • Community Garden: preparing the college's organic gardens for planting
  • Flowers/Word Garden: inventory and planting flowers
  • Archives: assisting with archive collection, sorting, labeling, filing
  • Child Care Center:  Cleaning kitchen and doing outside yard work
  • Chapel: cleaning and dusting

Off Campus:

  • COTS Family Shelter: Cleaning inside and out, gardening
  • All Breed Dog Rescue: Dog walking and kennel cleaning
  • Camp Ta-Kum-Ta: painting, weed whacking, working on flower beds, cleaning
  • Ronald MacDonald House: Cooking a meal for the families
  • Catamount Family Center: Trail maintenance
  • Rock Point School: Inside and outside cleaning, raking
  • Baked Love:  baking goodies distributed to non-profits for people in the community
  • St. Francis School: Outdoor work, gardening, painting, raking
