Internships

At many schools, internships are an afterthought. At Saint Michael's, they are a priority.

Experiential Learning is an important part of the liberal arts curriculum at Saint Michael's College.  We strongly support opportunities for our students to develop their critical thinking and learning outside of the classroom.  Students at Saint Michael’s College are encouraged to participate in internships as a way to extend their education in a real-world setting, explore career options, apply knowledge, expand their professional network, and gain transferable skills and experience.

Check out this list of some recent internship sites for some examples of where you could intern! Scroll down for more information about internships at Saint Michael's College.

What Employers Need To Know About Academic Internships

Internships offer an invaluable opportunity for our students to extend their education in a real-world setting, explore career options, apply knowledge, expand their professional network, and gain transferable skills.

If a student is using an internship to earn credits through Saint Michael’s College then they’ll be required to complete a minimum of 130 hours during the semester at an approved internship site.  The internship can be paid or unpaid, and the main goal in either case is for the student to contribute to the organization in a manner which will allow them to enhance their professional skills and apply their learning.

If your organization would like to recruit a student intern, here is the basic information that we’ll need to effectively advertise your opportunity:

  • Company information (address, phone, website)
  • Supervisor’s contact information (name, job title, email, phone)
  • Internship details
  • Title (this will appear as the headline of the posting in our SMC JobLink system)
  • Timeframe (fall, spring, summer)
  • Duties/responsibilities/projects/tasks
  • Learning outcomes/opportunities
  • Qualifications
  • Pay level (paid/unpaid)
  • Application instructions
  • Additional information you would like students to know before applying

Once your internship description is ready there are two options to get it advertised with us:

  1. Email your company’s internship information to careerdevelopment@smcvt.edu and we’ll post it for you.
  2. Post opportunities yourself in SMC JobLink by registering for a new employer account.

In general, students are seeking fall/spring internship opportunities in the greater Burlington, VT area, and summer opportunities nationwide.  Please feel free to contact the Office of Career Development if you have any questions or would like to talk further about our internship program or the needs of your organization.   We look forward to collaborating with you!

What did students gain from their internship experience?

Quotes from students who completed academic internships in 2014-15:

“It has given me the relevant experience I need.”

“This internship has opened my eyes to the fact that there are many possible career opportunities beyond the scope of my major.”

“I have been able to meet people in a variety of fields related to my studies to determine where I want to go after graduation.”

“My internship gave me relevant work experience that I will surely use in my future career. In addition to helping me acquire credits, I was able to learn so much about another culture and a different way of life in Africa. So it was beneficial both from a career standpoint, but also from a personal growth standpoint.”

“This internship encouraged my passion to work in direct human services. It was one of the most insightful experiences I've had at St. Mike’s.”

“It has given me the opportunity to broaden my horizons and try something I had never done before. The field that my internship was in is now one that I am very interested in pursuing.”
