Saint Michael’s College presents Senior Seminar Presentations by history majors, all day in succession with short breaks in-between, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. in Saint Edmund’s Hall 102. The Department of History invites all who are interested from the campus and the wider community to hear 12 students present on a wide variety of topics. Questions welcome. The format: Three-student panels will address such general areas as “Women’s History,” “Momentous Communications” and “Challenges to the Status Quo.” Individual student topics include Interpretation of Soviet Womanhood in Interwar Britain, Analysis of race, class and gender in South Carolina before, during and after the Stono slave rebellion; and, for a catch-all panel on “Drinking, Medicating and Walking,” papers on bootleggers; the Green Mountain Club; and one comparing how personal health affected decision-making by Hitler and FDR in World War II.
The South Burlington Community Chorus will be performing Randall Thompson's masterpiece Frostiana, settings of poems by Robert Frost such as The Road Not Taken and Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening. Written in 1959 and premiered with Frost in attendance, the music is both beautiful and stirring. Frostiana remains one of the cornerstones of choral music in the 20th century. The concert will also feature the rich music of contemporary American composers Frank Ticheli, Stephen Paulus and Stephen Chatman.
The Vermont National Guard and the Office of the Adjutant General are proud to present “Vermont’s Own” 40th Army Band performing a free holiday concert on Sunday December 4, 2016 at 2:00pm at St. Michael’s College’s McCarthy Recital Hall. The program will feature holiday favorites including Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride.” Members of the 40th Army Band serve one weekend a month and two weeks of Annual Training each year in the Vermont Army National Guard. As civilians the rest of the year, they are engaged in such diverse occupations as education, law, security, technology, medical, and sales.
The String Orchestra will present a Suite of Suites on Monday, Dec. 5 at 7:00 pm in the Recital Hall. The program includes Purcell, Telemann, Tchaikovsky, and Lou Harrison, among others. Susan Summerfield will join our 16 member chamber orchestra for two or our pieces.
The Sleepless Knights Winter Concert
A holiday tradition! This year, the College Chorale, accompanied by a professional string ensemble, rings in the Christmas season with a suite of traditional carols arranged by the great English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, and members of the College Community read traditional lessons foreshadowing and recounting the Birth of Christ. Come join in the cheer and sing along to 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,' 'The First Nowell,' and other favorites. Free admission.
