Local Food

The local food movement is strong in Vermont and it comes as no surprise that it’s a growing movement on the Saint Michael's Campus as well. There are many outlets that one can find local food here on campus.

Organic Garden Farm Stands

The Saint Michael's College Organic Garden has weekly farm stands on the campus green in front of the Chapel (St Edmund’s Hall Foyer if it’s raining) during the regular growing season (mid-July to mid-October). Don't forget to bring your own reusable bag to stock up on delicious, local, organic veggies, herbs and flowers!

Intervale Food Hub CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) - Faculty/Staff and Student Shares

The Office of Sustainability coordinates a partnership with the Intervale Food Hub CSA program for faculty, staff and students. This partnership has been going strong for over 3 years now. Faculty, staff and students can buy a CSA share that then gets delivered right to campus each week! Faculty and staff have the option of summer, winter and spring shares. Students have the option of a fall or spring semester share. To learn more, check out their website: Intervale Food Hub

Dining on Campus

Saint Michael's food service provider, Sodexo, continually strives to incorporate local products into the main dining hall on campus, the Green Mountain Dining Hall in Alliot. Over the course of the school year, 39% of the products in the dining hall are local. Black River Produce is the local food distributor through which Sodexo purchases the majority of its local produce. Other sustainable initiatives that part of campus dining include:

  • All seafood in the dining hall is on the Sustainable Seafood Watch list
  • fair trade bananas, coffee and tea are available
  • Sodexo supports the Keep Local Farms program which helps to support New England Dairy Farms. Saint Michael’s joined this initiative in the Spring of 2010, a 10 cent contribution on each single-serve milk sold on campus is contributed to Keep Local Farms

Food Justice Club

The SMC Food Justice club is a new student run club that is dedicated to raising awareness about food justice and fair trade.
