Institutional Review Board (IRB)

The Saint Michael’s College Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a committee appointed by the Vice President of Academic Affairs, charged to protect human participants involved in research and to ensure that this research is carried out in an ethical manner.*

Federal regulations stipulate that "…each institution or agency which conducts or which proposes to conduct or authorize human research shall establish a human research review committee...No human research shall be conducted or authorized by such institution or agency unless...such committee has reviewed and approved the proposed human research project..."  While Saint Michael’s policies are influenced by the guidelines of federal regulatory agencies, the Saint Michael’s College IRB is the agency ultimately responsible for creating and overseeing policies relevant to human subjects research on campus.

Ultimately, investigators must be familiar with and behave according to the spirit and letter of federal and professional guidelines pertaining to human research.  For more information on these federal regulations see the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services links on the right side of this page.

The following links have been developed to help you determine whether your research project requires IRB approval, and if so, to guide you through the application process.  Contact the IRB should you have additional questions.
