Your Mikenet (network) account allows a connection to a variety of network resources, including network printers, and a network share (Z:/) for storing your personal and academic documents. You'll use your Mikenet account to log in when you evaluate your instructors at the end of a semester, as well.
Individual roaming profiles store many of the settings and customizations used by applications that are installed on campus computers. Your roaming profile follows your Mikenet account, regardless of where or what campus computer you log in to. (These profiles only apply to College-owned computers.) Having this profile follow you allows to keep your preferred desktop background, your browser shortcuts and favorites, application configurations, and gives you access to your network share.
Because roaming profiles save any changes you make in your settings as you're working, your network account will always be up to date with your preferences.
A special note for faculty and staff: All faculty and staff members have a "local profile". Unlike roaming profiles, your local profile is stored on your office computer's hard drive and does not "move" with you as roaming profiles do. This means that changes you make on your office computer will not show up in labs or classrooms. Faculty and staff DO get a roaming profile when they use classroom or lab computers--this profile is used ONLY on campus computers, not in offices.
What are the symptoms of a corrupted profile? It is possible for a roaming profile to get corrupted when it gets too large.
- While logging onto a computer, you see a pop-up window that notifies you that your profile may be corrupted
- You suddenly lose the ability to print when you were able to do so earlier
- You experience irregularities in your desktop appearance (ie., color/style changes)
- You experience other unexplained “quirks,” such as applications not loading, inaccessible network drives, or persistent error messages
- An unanticipated decrease in the performance of your computer, including the speed of its internet connection
The best way to prevent profile corruption and loss of data is to follow the practices below:
Do… Save work to a network location, such as your Z: drive, or removable media, such as a flash drive or recordable CD-ROM, not to your desktop.
Do Not… Save work to the desktop! Desktop items are part of the roaming profile. While this may be convenient, the resulting wait for all of that data to be downloaded every time you log in outweighs the convenience; and this practice can result in data corruption. (Note: There is a cap on the size of both your Z: drive (3GB) and your profile (100MB). Any files which are not saved to your Z: drive are included in the size of your profile. Users that exceed the size limits are notified via email and will be required to reduce the amount of data stored in these locations.
Avoid… Logging onto multiple computers at the same time. This causes multiple copies of your roaming profile to download to multiple locations, resulting in file conflicts. The messages seen during the logon process “Loading your Personal Settings” and “Applying your Personal Settings” refer to the acquisition and application of your profile to the local machine. Interrupting this process in any way (such as rebooting or shutting down the computer) can damage your profile.
If you suspect your profile may be corrupted, please call the IT Helpdesk at 802.654.2020, so that your issue can be addressed right away. We may also be reached by e-mail at email@example.com. Not addressing a corrupted profile may cause the issue to become more problematic over time. The process of re-creating a roaming profile involves the removal of data in the existing profile.
