A Word about Computers
We highly recommend that you bring a wireless laptop or tablet computer to campus. Many professors require that students bring their own laptops to class, both for note-taking and also for specific applications that are taught within the framework of the class. If this is a component of any of your courses, it is extremely important that your computer be fully charged, clean of viruses, and working smoothly.
If you're planning to buy a new computer to bring to campus this fall, our Student Laptop Program will provide you with the recommended laptop solutions that include four years of on-site support and accidental damage protection, Microsoft Office, anti-virus software and a loaner option when your laptop needs service.
In order to ensure compatibility with our network, computers must have Windows 7 or higher, or Mac OSX 10.7 or higher. We cannot guarantee network access for computers that do not meet these requirements.
In addition to a computer, you'll want to bring your own headsets, as well as a security device to deter theft. As part of the college's green efforts, we recommend that you use the college's networked and multifunction printers for printing, scanning and copying, rather than bringing a personal printer to campus.
While space is provided for you to save or back up files on the network, you should also bring either an external or large flash drive for saving files. As an alternative to an external drive, you may use your email account, as it includes storage.
More and more students bring smartphones with data plans to campus each year. Smartphones must first be registered on the network for full wireless connectivity. To register a smartphone, use the native browser on the phone and just follow the onscreen directions when the phone connects to the internet for the first time.
Tablets, ebook readers, and other such personal technology must also be registered on the network. Because they are registered in a different manner than smartphones, we recommend that you send an email message to email@example.com with your name, a phone number where you can be reached, and the MAC address of the device you want to register. We'll do the rest and let you know when your device is ready to start working.
