Registering Your Personal Computer or Device at Saint Michael's

Saint Michael's College has put measures into place to minimize network exposure to viruses and malware. All non-College owned equipment must pass a scan and be registered on the campus network in order to use any network services.

Update your operating system

Run Windows update from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Our recommendation is to configure your computer to run the Windows Update process automatically at least once a week. The automatic updates may be enabled from the System Control Panel.

Update your anti-virus software

To join the student network at Saint Michael's, all computers must have a recommended anti-virus program installed. In the 2011-2012 academic year, recommended programs include Avast, Eset NOD32, F-Prot, F-Secure, Grisoft AVG, McAfee-Enterprise, McAfee-Home, Norton EndPoint and Panda. The virus signatures in the anti-virus program should be updated regularly, at least once a day. If you need help configuring an update schedule in your anti-virus software, please contact the Saint Michael's College Helpdesk for assistance.

Update anti-spyware software

Your anti-virus software will probably include an anti-spyware component. However, due to the prevalence of spyware on the web, we recommend you install a stand-alone anti-spyware application, such as Webroot-SpySweeper, Spybot or MalwareBytes. Your anti-spyware solution should be set up to update on a regular basis. (In many cases, it’s as simple as starting the application and choosing the update button.)

Registering a Mac Computer

It’s as easy as pointing your browser to http://regnet.smcvt.edu. Follow the on-screen instructions and you’ll be good to go in a short time.

Other Devices

To register a Smartphone or iTouch for use on SMC WiFi, use Safari or the built-in browser to connect to the Internet. You’ll be automatically taken to our registration page, where you’ll be prompted for your Mikenet username and password. Just follow the on-screen instructions to complete the registration process.
