My Saint Michael's

Teaching Spanish is central to my experience as a Hispanist and scholar. Interaction with students challenges me to keep lessons innovative, motivating, and effective. In all of my classes, my goal is to foster improved communication through language, promote cross-cultural awareness and respect, and prepare students for their lives as global citizens. I work to enrich a student's ability to read, think about, and discuss literature with a new critical awareness of their aesthetic, cultural, and historical significance.

See my Areas of Expertise under the biography tab – these are also my research interests. Teaching invigorates my research as I present and discuss topics in different ways to new audiences with broad perspectives.

I presented at the Kentucky Foreign Language Conference (2009) and have given invited lectures on the Spanish Civil War at Yale University.

Nicole Mombell, assistant professor of modern languages & literature (Spanish), recently had an article accepted for publication: “Re-Membering War: Javier Cercas’s Soldados de Salamina and La velocidad de la luz as Prosthetic Memory, in Letras Hispanas 10.2 (Forthcoming). Nicole also made a conference presentation: “Teaching Representations of Resistance and Repression in Popular Spanish Film” at Cine-Lit VIII: International Conference on Hispanic Film and Fiction, Portland, Oregon, February 2015.
