My Saint Michael's:
In my math education classes, students complete a unique field experience in a public school classroom with children of immigrants from all over the world. It is exciting for my students to teach a child from Somalia how to count in English or a student from Bosnia how to multiply.
My research informs my teaching through the inclusion of new things I discover about how children learn math when I work with teachers/children in public schools. My students experience similar opportunities.
I published a book chapter titled "Making Math Meaningful for students with Special Needs" in Quick Guides to Inclusion: Ideas for Educating Students with Disabilities (April 2007). I was also awarded a faculty development grant to conduct a seminar on teaching math to students with diverse needs.
Tim Whiteford, associate professor of education, had his paper, “Is Mathematics a Universal Language," accepted for the New Hampshire Teachers of Mathematics conference on April 5, 2013, in Manchester, NH.
