What do you like about St. Mike's?
I love that St. Mike's wants you to be more than just a student here. They do a lot to help you be a member of larger society through programs like Fire and Rescue, MOVE, or the camps that our sports teams do for kids.
What's your favorite class?
There are two I was surprised to like so much. One is Catholic Christianity, and even though I'm Catholic, I never knew the history of Christianity. The other is Intro to Philosophy. I have learned about different approaches to thinking. I'm glad philosophy is required, and I might even minor in it.
What's one thing you've learned at SMC that's been inspiring?
St. Mike's brings in really good speakers. Two I liked were River Huston, who told her story of going down a bad road and what drinking did to her in college and after; and then LZ Granderson, a gay journalist and sports-writer who talked about what it's like for him to work in such a macho environment. It's a great time to realize that the world doesn't just revolve around you and that there's a lot more to the world than just what your ideas are. These speakers inspire me to be more open and think differently, to accept other values and ideas.
In what ways do you engage with the community?
I'm a student instructor for the Wilderness Program, trained in hiking, and I hope to become one for rock-climbing, maybe paddle sports. Taking people out in the wilds is a good way for them to try something new.
What do you do in your spare time?
I like hanging out with my friends, going to Burlington, playing intramural sports - I've done soccer, volleyball and floor hockey - and just enjoying college.
What do you think you want to do with your life?
I would love to live abroad, maybe try to get a job working with an international organization like Amnesty International or the U.N. I definitely want to do something that I wake up and look forward to doing.
What makes you happy?
Being around my friends and being at a place I enjoy. I love that I can go home and be with my family, but St. Mike's is a new family where I feel welcome coming back.
