Summer Internships

Students can earn credit for a credible summer internship if their gpa is 2.0  and they take the following steps:

1. The internship  site supervisor submits the internship description and all contact information (supervisor’s name , number  and email address; company name, address and website)  to the Internship Director ( Jlabrake@smcvt.edu) for academic approval.  The internship description must clearly state that the projects involved allow the intern the opportunity to integrate skills they have learned in the classroom.  This must be a true learning experience for the intern.  Administrative tasks must be kept at a minimum.  This must be a bonafide internship.  Jobs cannot be converted to internships. Interns may not be supervised by a family member or by a site supervisor that reports directly to a family member.

2. If  it is the student’s first academic internship,  register for the online course (ID 498).   If it is their second or third academic internship,  it is the responsibility of the student to make arrangements with one of the professor’s in their department to serve as their faculty supervisor and oversee the academic component of the internship.

3. Once you have received approval for your internship site, type the online application, print, and  secure all signatures.  If you need to use a fax, see Leslie Turner, our administrative assistant in Klein 119.  Print  a hard copy for your records.

4. Submit the completed application to the Leslie Turner by May 1st.

5. At the end of your internship, site supervisors complete the final evaluation that is on our website and mail it directly to your faculty supervisor.

SUMMER INTERNSHIPS OUTSIDE OF VERMONT

If you want to pursue a summer internship outside of Vermont, the Internship Office will assist you as much as possible.  Because of the nature of summer internships, with many of them being outside of Vermont, you are expected to conduct your own search throughout the year.   The final responsibility rests with you.   Plan to attend a Summer Internship Informational Meeting at the beginning of each semester.  We will guide you through this unique process.

If you qualify for an academic internship (GPA 2.0 or above) you are given the opportunity to earn academic credit if the site is approved by the Internship Office and/or your department.     Applications for summer academic internships follow the same protocol as internship offered during the school year.  To apply, follow the Academic Summer Internship Process (1-5 above).

SUMMER ALUMNI INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (Juniors Only)
