The department is highly eclectic, with expertise in a wide range of subject areas and theoretical approaches. All of its members share a passion for sensitive reading, adroit writing, complex thinking, and effective speaking—skills that are fundamental to a liberal arts education and vital assets in any career path. We offer introductory and advanced courses in British, American, and world literatures, critical theory, film, drama, creative writing, and a host of special topics.

Members of the department play central roles in College programs such as American Studies, First-Year Seminar, Gender Studies, Honors, Humanities, Medieval Studies, and the Writing Center.
