The English Department at Saint Michael’s College seeks through the study of literature to stimulate aesthetic awareness, elevate critical thought, and encourage reflection on moral and cultural issues. The department is highly eclectic, with expertise in a wide range of subject areas and theoretical approaches. All of its members share a passion for sensitive reading, adroit writing, complex thinking, and effective speaking—skills that are fundamental to a liberal arts education and vital assets in any career path. We offer introductory and advanced courses in British, American, and world literatures, critical theory, film, drama, creative writing, and a host of special topics.
Members of the department play central roles in College programs such as American Studies, First-Year Seminar, Gender Studies, Honors, Humanities, Medieval Studies, and the Writing Center.
