Academic Subjects

"The main reason I decided to attend College Exploration Week was to prepare myself for the college experience.  It also looks good on college applications."
-- past CEW Participant

Biology

Learn about environmental biology and technology in a series of hands-on activities. Participants will investigate ecology, animal behavior, and environmental technology by conducting laboratory and outdoor experiements. Local aquatic and forest ecosystems will be explored.

Business Entrepreneurship

Participants will work in teams to develop a business plan for a new startup venture. The week will end with a presentation of all startup ideas to a panel of bankers and investors. They will also get a chance to run a virtual company in an exciting computer simulation, making decisions on product pricing, promotion and design as they compete for sales and market share.

Creative Writing

Creative writing can take many forms: short stories, poems, stage plays, screenplays, and songs, to name a few.  Participants will choose a genre of writing and work to complete a short, polished manuscript by week’s end.  Class time will be spent on writing, critiquing manuscripts in a workshop, and revision.  The week will end with a class reading.

Journalism

Learn how different media vehicles address issues of libel and privacy as you take part in a mock trial dealing with major media issues. Participants will play the parts of lawyers, plaintiffs and defendants in a hands-on examination of the media.
