Because of the cost and limited availability of housing in Chittenden County, it generally takes weeks or even months to find suitable permanent housing for families.

Families living in the shelter as well as COTS shelter staff rely heavily on volunteer support.

Responsibilities: The Shelter Staff Assistant will be assisting the family-shelter staff with day-to-day operations of the shelter, including some clerical tasks, house and grounds maintenance, and other special projects, such as community-dinner night. Weekend and evening hours are available.

Requirements: Ability to get along well with lots of diverse people is very important. Computer skills, good handwriting, and the ability to maintain a regular schedule are also important.

Field/Political

Field/Political Interns help expand DFA’s grassroots network by working directly with over 400 local DFA groups around the country. Title:  ENVIRONMENTAL INTERN

The internship will be designed with the student to provide a project that involves areas of interest to the student and the needs of the facility.  The student must be able to work independently.  Tasks will be related to the water quality field including storm water and/or wastewater treatment.  Responsibilities may include environmental field analysis or wastewater process analysis, as well as related background research.  The student should have a mechanical aptitude and a scientific approach to problem solving.  A project could include process performance evaluation, storm water/in-stream analysis, rate analysis, utility comparative analysis, alternative energy evaluation or chemical evaluation of process waste streams.

The internship will be designed with the student to provide a project that involves areas of interest to the student and the needs of the facility.  The student must be able to work independently.  The project will relate to the business aspects of public utility operations and management.  Responsibilities will involve financial and regulatory background research with findings applied to evaluate facility financial performance.  Potential projects could include rate analysis, cost benefit evaluation of process alternatives, asset management or capital planning.  The student should have an interest in utility operations and management.
