Guidelines

The following guidelines are included on this page:

  • Eligibility requirements to participate in the Internship program
  • Number of credits that a student can earn through an internship
  • Description of the evaluation tools
  • Policies governing the internship program.

Eligibility:

A 2.7 cumulative grade point average is required.

Academic waivers: Students with a cumulative grade point average of 2.56-2.69 can apply for an Academic Waiver.  A written petition to Kathleen Balutansky, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs is required.  A petition for an academic waiver must include:

  - Statement of the Student’s intent to participate
  - Current unofficial transcript with justification of cumulative GPA from the Registrar's Office
  - Reason(s) an academic waiver should be granted
  - Written support from the Faculty Supervisor and/or Department Chair

Applicants must have junior or senior standing, although exceptionally qualified second semester sophomores may be considered.  Transfer students must complete a minimum of one semester of academic work at Saint Michael’s College.  Internships may not be done as an overload during a regular academic semester.

Attend informational meeting held in September for Spring Semester and January for Fall Semester. Complete Memo of Intent received at informational meeting and submit it to the Internship Office.

Students may not be placed in a position, work unit, or department that is supervised by a member of the immediate family.  The immediate family shall include a parent, parent-in-law, daughter/son in-law, grandparent, grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, sibling, spouse’s sibling, or persons living in the same household.

Credits:  Internship credit is variable and assigned from one to five credits as determined by the Internship Director.

Hours:  One credit equals 45 ON-SITE internship hours.  Ten hours per week are required on site for 3 credits.

Internship registration:  Once your application is approved, the Internship Director will submit it to the Registrar.  You cannot register for the internship through KnightVision.  Registration must be conducted through the Internship Office.

Tuition:  Tuition is paid in accordance with the College’s schedule for any credits earned through an academic internship.  A student may not withdraw from a placement except in severe and justifiable circumstances.  A dishonorable dismissal nullifies the internship arrangement at the risk of academic penalty and loss of tuition.

Evaluation Process:  At the end of the semester, the site supervisor evaluates the intern’s performance.  Each intern will provide his or her site supervisor with the Evaluation form.  The site supervisor completes the evaluation of the intern’s performance on-line and mails a hard copy of the evaluation to the Faculty Supervisor.

The faculty supervisor submits a final grade based on the intern’s completion of the Site Supervisor’s and Faculty Supervisor’s academic component and the site supervisor’s evaluation.  Evaluation is worth 15-25% of final grade.

At the end of the semester, interns complete the Program Evaluation Form and submit it to the Internship Office.

Program Policies:  Students are responsible for behaving in a professional manner and holding in professional confidence any information gained regarding the sponsoring organization.

Permissible work absences include illness or other serious circumstances.  The student is responsible for notifying the employer in case of absence.

Any changes in placement, such as cutback in hours or dismissal, must be reported immediately to the Internship Director.

If a student feels victimized by a work-related incident, such as a job misrepresentation, unethical practices, sexual harassment or discrimination, contact the Internship Director immediately.
