Got Collections? Contest

Deadline for collections submission is past

Collectors and collections will be celebrated at a reception 4pm, Thursday, April 16th in the Library's Dailey Room. All are welcome!

Calling all collectors: Dust off those shelves! Clear out those closets! Share your flair for creative groupings and compelling assemblages! Saint Michael's College is hosting a BOOK collecting contest and an OTHER-THAN-BOOK collecting contest to celebrate reading and the pleasures of collecting. All undergraduates are invited to enter.

Collections may focus on a particular topic or field, individual author/illustrator or genre, historical or physical feature, or some other unifying theme, principle, or idea.

BOOK COLLECTIONS

First Prize: $300.00
Second Prize: $150.00

OTHER-THAN-BOOK COLLECTIONS

First Prize: $300.00
Second Prize: $150.00

Book Collections will include at least eight hard cover or paperback books that are germane to the collection's focus. How well a collection reflects the collector's intent is more significant than either the number of items or the monetary value of the collection.

Entries must include:

1. A completed entry form.

2. A one-page essay describing the history, content, and significance of the collection.

3. An annotated bibliography in a standard bibliographic format.

4. A "wish list" of at least five other book titles that you would like to add in the future to complete or enhance your existing collection.

5. The books themselves.

Other-Than-Book Collections will include at least eight small or medium-sized objects, ephemera, curiosities, maps, or prints. How well a collection reflects the collector's intent is more significant than either the number of items or the monetary value of the collection.

Entries must include:

1. A completed entry form.

2. A one-page essay describing the history, content, and significance of the collection.

3. A description of at least five representative items from the collection. Descriptions should reflect the importance of each item to the collection as a whole.

4. A "wish list" of at least five other items that you would like to add in the future to complete or enhance your existing collection.

5. The items themselves. If items are unwieldy, digital images may be substituted.

Submission and Evaluation

Submit all materials to Kristen Hindes in Library 205 by 4pm, Thursday, March 26th.

Evaluation criteria: Collections will be evaluated on their cohesiveness and unity, as well as their originality and creativity. The judges are particularly interested in collections that demonstrate great thoughtfulness on the part of the collector in addition to a vision for the future growth of the collection.

The judging panel will consist of members of the Saint Michael's College faculty and staff. Submissions will be reviewed anonymously.
