What do you do for a living?
I'm one of the lead Product Analyst at Postmates, which is the leading on-demand logistics company (competing with the likes of Uber, DoorDash, etc) based in San Francisco. My team is a mix of data analysts and scientists. We build data tools and make company-wide recommendations based on our insights, which can range from forecasting demand volume to understanding how price-sensitive a particular segment of our customer base is.
How did your experience at Saint Michael's help prepare you for your career?
Having to take a diverse range of courses helped me better reason and understand different perspectives (Philo w/ Prof Standen for example), which is crucial in the professional setting that is full of trade-offs. The ability to pull any professor over for a quick chat or a question fostered the exchange of ideas and ultimately, curiousity - a characteristic we very much value when hiring new analysts.
What is your favorite memory from your time at St. Mike's?
Building out the spring semester schedule to accommodate the maximum number of ski days was always a fun exercise! As was the opportunity to work on an independent research project one summer.
Do you have any advice for students at St. Mike's?
Do a semester or better yet, a year of study-abroad (and do take challenging courses). The curriculum at a large research institution has a lot to offer, so take advantage of it. Lastly, in a workforce that's becoming increasingly more technical, do focus on STEM, but the value of the Liberal Arts courses will surely catch up!
