Through an initiative to better connect with our neighbors in the Burlington and Winooski area, the Service-Learning Program has received a number of requests from community organizations to partner with academic departments and faculty.

Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf
Program Description: The Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf, the largest in the state, is dedicated the providing food relief services to low-income individuals throughout Chittenden County lacking adequate food supply or nourishment.

Essex CHIPS and Teen Center
Program Description: Essex CHIPS is a community coalition of youth and adults dedicated to strengthening the lives of you and teens in and around the towns of Essex and Essex Junction.
Service-Learning Opportunity: Volunteers are needed to support the Teen Center staff, and build programming for attendees!
The Nurturing Parent Program, City of Winooski Parks and Recreation
Program Description: The Nurturing Parent Program (NPP) aims to teach parents to be more nurturing, focusing on preventative as opposed to punitive measures. Approximately 10 families sign up for the weekly sessions, during which they are separated between parents and children and guided through a series of corresponding lesson plans. Group leaders are trained to run the program, and a trained staff sits in on each meeting.
Service-Learning Opportunity: Adult and child group leaders are needed for a 3-5 hour/week (weekday evening) commitment.
Sara Holbrook Community Center
Program Description: The mission of the Sara Holbrook Community Center is to develop responsible and productive children, youth and families through social development, educational and recreational opportunities. Located in the Old North End of Burlington, the Center serves a diverse community of local residents and New Americans.

Vermont Teacher Diversity Scholarship Program
Program Description: The VT Teacher Diversity Scholarship Program is a non-profit loan cancellation program to support students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds who wish to enter the teaching profession.
Service-Learning Opportunity: The Program is in need of a measuring tool to quantify their teachers’ effect in the classroom – whether they are broadening the horizons of the students they teach, changing attitudes, challenging misperceptions, etc.
Winooski Memorial Library
Program Description: Serving the Winooski community since 1908, the Library offers high-speed public internet access, entertaining and educational children’s program, free computer classes, and extensive book collection, and continually aim to be an important resource in our community.

Winooski Teen Center
Program Description: The Winooski Teen Center was envisioned and created by the Teen Advisory Board, a group of Winooski High School students, to offer a fun and safe space to high school-aged teens. The Center is sponsored by the City of Winooski’s Departments of Community Development and Parks and Recreation, in collaboration with Casey Family Services.
