For Students

Students are one of the major stakeholders in service-learning, as it is your education that is shaped, your world view that is affected. Participation in a service-learning course or component offers you the opportunity to:

  • gain practical use of knowledge that increases relevance of academic skills.
  • see an increased sense of self-efficacy, analytical skills and social development/civic responsibility.
  • receive valuable career guidance and preparation for the workforce.
  • make a meaningful connection with the local community.
  • have fun!

Get Involved
Student knowledge and involvement is instrumental in assuring the success of service-learning at Saint Michael’s College.  To become an active supporter of the Program, you may want to:

  • Learn more about service-learning.  Review the “About Service-Learning” section of this site, visit the on-line resources available through the “Faculty” section or borrow one of the many texts available at Durkin Library or through the Service-Learning Program.
  • Join us at one of the many on-campus events we host throughout the year.
  • Enroll in a service-learning course.  Contact the Service-Learning Coordinator to see what courses may best suit your interests.
  • Spread the word!  Talk with your peers and your professors about integrating service-learning into the curriculum.  Share your ideas for service-learning in specific courses with the Service-Learning Program.
  • Become a Service-Learning Scholar!

AmeriCorps & The Service-Learning Scholars Program
As an active college student, you are helping to build a better world – and AmeriCorps wants to support you!  With the Student Service Leadership Corps, you have the opportunity to earn up to $2,362 toward your education for committing yourself to a specified term of service.  Corps members on campus either work for the Fire and Rescue Squad or the Service-Learning Program, in addition to the other great activities they may do through MOVE, or on their own.

Students enrolled through the Service-Learning Program will join the Service-Learning Scholars Program.  Designed to provide additional support for faculty members and community partners engaged in service-learning projects, the Scholars Program trains students in the pedagogy, and places them in leadership opportunities on campus and in the community.

Congratulations to this year’s recipients, who have dedicated themselves to a total of 5,700 hours and will be receiving a combined total of over $15,000 in Education Awards!

If you are interested in applying for the next application cycle, please contact Joan Wagner, Coordinator of Service-Learning, via email at jwagner@smcvt.edu, or phone at 654.2844.
