How did you find Saint Michael's College?
In high school, when I really started thinking about college, there were several colleges I had in mind, but Saint Michael's College was always at the top of my list.  I had heard positive things about the education department at Saint Michael’s—an important factor for me because I have wanted to be an elementary school teacher since I was in the second grade.

What was it like applying for financial aid?
Once I was accepted to Saint Michael’s and all my financial aid paperwork was in, I anxiously awaited my financial aid package. My financial aid award was the last thing I needed before I could have the final “okay” from my parents. When my award letter finally arrived, it included Stafford loans, a Perkins loan, the Saint Michael's Honor Scholarship and eventually student employment. With the promise I would help pay for my education with some of my savings and by taking out alternative loans in addition to the aid I was awarded, I was on my way to Saint Michael's College in the fall of 2002.

What about financial aid after your first year?
Every year since my first year at Saint Michael's, I have had to nag my dad to get the FASFA (Free Application for Student Financial Aid) and all the other paperwork submitted on time.  Each year I would anxiously await my financial aid package, and each year it has all worked out.

Going into my senior year, I have accepted the maximum amount of Stafford loans I could and accepted the Saint Michael's Honor Scholarship each year. Also, I have taken out Perkins loans and alternative loans for two years, and had student employment each school year and for three summers.

What is is like to have a work-study position on campus?
Work-study has been a great opportunity for me because I have been able to earn money to put toward college and have worked with people who were flexible with my schedule and understanding of my school work load.

What advice would you give to prospective students who are concerned about the financial aid process/paying for college?
My advice to prospective students is find out early on what all the deadlines are for applying for financial aid and get information on what scholarships are available. Also, apply for as many outside scholarships as you can. Even though it may take some time and you will have to do some extra work, it will be worth it.
