After traveling to New Hampshire in November to follow various Democratic and Republican candidates on the campaign trail, the Saint Michael's College students in Professor David Mindich's Media and American Politics class took it a step further. They have created a Web site providing access to the public and the press of all the 2008 candidates for president:
http://minorcandidates.com
The students' site, explains, "Most media outlets only talk about the top 16 candidates running for President. However, there are 42 people on the
New Hampshire ballot. This Web site profiles the candidates who are ignored by the mainstream media."
Starting with minor candidates, 14 Democrats and 13 Republicans, the site concludes with the major candidates. There are also three VP candidates, as well as the eight major candidates, each, for Democrats and Republicans. All the candidates, major and minor, are listed with their individual Web site URL address included as a live link. Access is thereby made easy.
The point is the students' own education, but also the furtherance of an informed populace. According to the site, "The objective for this site was to provide a platform for candidates deemed 'minor' by the media. The hopefuls are trying to tell America their messages, despite what they see as an unfair advantage for those who can pay for coverage."
Citizens need information to participate fully in our democracy. Thus the students and their professor have provided access to fuller information regarding what many consider the most important presidential election in a generation. The site was designed by sophomore journalism major,
Mollie Brault-Binaghi of Barre, Vt.
Saint Michael's College, founded in 1904 by the Society of St. Edmund and headed by President John J. Neuhauser, is included in Princeton Review's
