Two Saint Michael's College students have been named Politi International Fellows as a result of their winning proposals, and will thereby receive $5,000 grants to support research and study abroad for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Angela Carello, a sophomore classics major from Plainville, Mass., was selected on the basis of her proposal to study Latin and Greek texts at St. Andrew's University in Scotland. "I was impressed with your passion for Classics and particularly with your understanding of how the study of Classics has improved your life and helps you to understand other people," said Dr. Karen Talentino, Saint Michael's Vice President for Academic Affairs, in announcing that Ms. Carello would receive the fellowship.

Alexandra L. Melillo, a sophomore business major from Park Ridge, N.J., was selected on the basis of her proposal to study at Musashi University in Tokyo, Japan. "I was very impressed with the description of your fascination and passion for Japanese culture and language," said Dr. Karen Talentino, Saint Michael's Vice President for Academic Affairs, in announcing that Melillo would receive the fellowship.

These fellowships are being funded by the Dr. A. Francis Politi International Fund at Saint Michael's College, established "to strengthen the College's abilities to produce graduates who have studied in other nations as a means to gain a deeper understanding of foreign cultures, develop fluency in a foreign language, and generally increase their global perspective." The first Politi Fellowship was awarded last year.

The late Francis Politi had a long, astonishing career brought him into worldwide prominence as a statesman for the U.S. government and as a businessman in countries far and wide. He died at age 95 in Northfield, Vt., his hometown, in May of 2006.

Saint Michael's College, founded in 1904 by the Society of St. Edmund and headed by President John J. Neuhauser, is identified by the Princeton Review as one of the nation's Best 368 Colleges. A liberal arts, residential, Catholic college, Saint Michael's is located just outside of Burlington, Vermont, one of America's top college towns and less than two hours from Montreal. As one of only 270 institutions nationwide with a prestigious Phi Beta Kappa chapter on campus, Saint Michael's has 2,000 full-time undergraduate students, some 500 graduate students and 200 international students. In recent years Saint Michael's students and professors have received Rhodes, Woodrow Wilson, Guggenheim, Fulbright, National Science Foundation and other grants, and Saint Michael's professors have been named Vermont Professor of the Year in four of the last eight years.
