In concert with a nationwide effort, orchestrated by the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU), Saint Michael’s College has joined 512 institutions in U-CAN, University and College Accountability Network, to be launched September 26 at 11 a.m. at www.ucan-network.org

U-CAN, a web-based consumer information resource on private colleges and universities, is an alternative or supplement to the controversial USNews magazine rankings. U-CAN will provide prospective students and their parents reliable information for selecting a college that fits the student. U-CAN is essentially a website of searchable uniform, comparable information provided by each institution.

Students can find detailed information about each college and can link from each school’s U-CAN page through hyperlinks to the college’s own website. Each institution followed a common format to provide information about admissions, location, the student body profile, demographics, cost and tuition, student aid, graduation rates and campus life.

U-CAN is, in part, a response to requests from Congress and the U.S. Department of Education for comparable, concise, relevant and accessible information that will help the public evaluate and select a college. Higher education, in both the public and independent sectors, is being pushed to provide greater institutional transparency and accountability. U-CAN seeks to answer that push.

What’s on the site?
Detailed information is given at the U-CAN website about each school’s graduates, including internships, career & placement services, graduate school preparation, and alumni achievements. Linkable details regarding majors, academic life, faculty, class size, transfer of credit policy, and accreditation are on the page with hyperlinks as well.

A pre-set list of ‘campus life’ categories is addressed on the site by each school. Thus there are links to residential life, housing options, lectures and outside learning opportunities, intercollegiate sports, student organizations, study abroad, intramural and club sports, community service opportunities, cultural and arts opportunities, religious and spiritual life, support for students with disabilities, student employment, and campus safety. Each category is clickable, and each goes to the relevant spot on the school’s own website.

Searchable feature
A search feature will allow users to search for a variety of institutional subsets, including state, affiliation, and distance from the student’s zip code. More searchable features may be added in future upgrades of the site, according to NAICU.

Saint Michael's College
