John Van Houten
Title: Leavy Family Professor of Chemistry

Education: B.S. University of Delaware; Ph.D. University of California, Santa Barbara

Areas of Expertise/Research Interests: Analytical and inorganic chemistry, inorganic photochemistry and spectroscopy, Electron transfer processes of coordination complexes.

Testimonial: In chemistry we have an excellent "track record" of success for our graduates in the work force, graduate school and professional (i.e. medical, dental and law) schools.

What do you like about Saint Michael's students? Their intellectual capacity and their ability to apply what they have learned. They are very enthusiastic about getting involved in research at Saint Michael's and elsewhere.

What is your favorite class to teach, and why? Advanced Inorganic Chemistry because it brings together so much of what students have learned in their earlier chemistry courses.

What kinds of unique opportunities are available to students in your classes or department? Our students in chemistry have direct access to a broad array of modern scientific instrumentation. This enables them to walk into any lab and begin working productively from day one. They often spend summers doing research on our campus or at research universities around the country. They are well-prepared to excel in graduate school, medical school or the scientific workforce, and are in high demand.
