Applied Linguisitcs / TESOL

The Applied Linguistics Department (ALD) enrolls students from all around the globe, including Asia, Latin America, Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

For more than half a century, nearly 20,000 international students of diverse linguistic, national, and cultural backgrounds, representing 85 or more countries, have studied on Saint Michael's campus. We offer the following programs:

Our highly qualified ALD faculty average twenty-five years of experience each; the vast majority of them hold a Ph.D. from prestigious U.S. universities in linguistics or related fields and have completed decades of teaching and research in ESL, TESOL, applied linguistics, teacher education and training.

The ALD programs were developed to reflect our mission to promote international and intercultural understanding. They are among the longest-standing programs in the U.S. The IEP began in 1954 and our TESOL program in 1962. Our AEP has prepared students for long-term academic study in numerous majors since 1972. Our global reputation for ESL teacher education and training has earned us several Federal Grants and a number of Fulbright scholars from around the world.
