The Drama League of New York City, an organization of 89 American theater companies, this week chose the Saint Michael's Playhouse as "one of the best regional theater companies in America" and invited the company to join its Theatre Excellence in America program. The Drama League informed Chuck Tobin, producing artistic director of the Playhouse, that Saint Michael's Playhouse was chosen because its record of excellence would enhance the League's agenda of "increasing awareness of quality professional theatre."

Currently playing at the Saint Michael's Playhouse is the hilarious, but 'weighty,' fast and furious, totally entertaining Moonlight and Magnolias, directed by Broadway veteran Kenneth Kimmins.

The Drama League launched Theatre Excellence in America in 1996 and boasts a prestigious contingent of American theater company members including Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Yale Repertory Theater, Hartford Stage, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Huntington Theatre Company, The Guthrie, Utah Shakespeare Festival, and Arena Stage of Washington, DC, among others, including a number of Off-Broadway theaters.

Saint Michael's Playhouse is Greater Burlington's professional summer theater, celebrating live theater, nationally renowned Equity actors, and a professional theater internship program in the heart of Northern Vermont's liveliest community. From its humble beginnings in 1947, Saint Michael's Playhouse has blossomed into an eight-week theater season housed in one of Vermont's finest theater venues, Saint Michael's McCarthy Arts Center. As the area's only professional summer theater, Saint Michael's Playhouse features stellar talent from Broadway, Off-Broadway, and regional theaters nationwide, hiring actors and stage managers who are members of Actor's Equity Association - the union of professional actors and stage managers in the United States. Each season approximately 14,000 theatergoers experience the unparalleled opportunity to see live, professional New York-caliber theater, produced and presented right here in Vermont.
