The Global Health Challenge:
Awareness and Advocacy
On April 26, the Edmundite Center for Peace and Justice at Saint Michael’s College will host a conference entitled, “The Global Health Challenge: Awareness and Advocacy.” In keeping with the Catholic vision that links peace to social and economic development, a day-long series of speakers will discuss problems and emerging solutions in the effort to provide access to health care for the world’s poor.

“Politics and Global Health,” McCarthy Recital Hall
Speakers: Nils Daulaire, president of the Global Health Council and former senior health adviser to US AID; and Les Roberts, Columbia University epidemiologist, co-author of the Lancet report, which was attacked by the Bush administration and put the civilian death toll for the Iraq War at more than 600,000.

Stephen Lewis is the former special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, and former Canadian Ambassador to the UN. He is also one of Time Magazine’s “100 most influential people in the world;” MacLean’s Man of the Year; and author of the best-selling book, Race Against Time.

The Pharmaceutical Companies and Global Health Panel
Panelist Jamie Love (pictured left) is the director of CP Tech, which focuses on intellectual property rights and health care. He is the international point person for the Doha Agreement, which declared that poor countries should be allowed to break the multi-national drug companies’ patent monopoly and produce their own low-cost drugs.
Panelist Patricia Siplon, associate professor of political science, is the author of AIDS and the Policy Struggle in the US and Drugs into Bodies:Global AIDS Treatment Activism.
Panelist Bill Haddad is founder and CEO of Biogenerics, a generic drug company.
Michael Bosia, assistant professor of political science, will moderate the panel.
