FAQ's About:
MATESOL plus ESL Licensure

  1. Does Saint Michael's College grant teaching licenses?

No, only the Vermont Department of Education grants teaching licenses. Saint Michael’s Graduate Education Department recommends candidates for licensure to the State of Vermont.

  2. Can I use my Vermont ESL License in other states?

See a list of states with reciprocity agreements with Vermont at:
    www.smcvt.edu/graduate/programs/matesl/reciprocal.asp

  3. Can I use my Vermont ESL License abroad?

A state-approved teacher license is especially useful for international schools which follow the U.S. education system. In fact, several of these schools require state-approved licensure for teachers.

  4. If I decide not to do the licensure program now, can I come back after I finish the MATESOL and do it later?

Yes, although if you enter the Licensure program after you have finished the MATESOL, you will need to take up to 21 credits (Education courses plus student teaching component), plus any K-12”MATESOL courses (up to 9 credits) that you didn’t take as electives in the MATESOL.

  5. When do I need to decide whether I want to take the MATESOL with the ESL Licensure Program?

As early as possible in your MATESOL program. The 49-credit course of study for the MATESOL plus ESL Licensure Program is tightly structured, with several courses replacing those in the regular 36-credit MATESOL. Inform your MATESOL advisor of this choice as early as possible.

  6. Can I teach ESL in public schools with a MATESOL (not the License)?

Not in Vermont, although you may well find work as a substitute teacher or tutor. Some other states may require little more qualification than the MATESOL. Others may hire you while you are working toward your license for that state. Always contact the state you plan to work in and ask about their requirements.

  7. Are there full-time ESL jobs in Vermont public schools?

Yes, although the competition for ESL jobs in Vermont is tough in comparison with many other states.

  8. I finished the MATESOL and am applying for ESL licensure in another state. Can you write me a letter confirming that I finished the MATESOL program and took courses relevant to K-12 ESL?

Yes; such a letter often helps MATESOL graduates obtain their ESL License in other states. See your MATESOL advisor.

  9. I finished the MATESOL and am applying for ESL licensure in another state. Can you write me a letter for a Department of Education form verifying that I completed the teacher preparation program at Saint Michael’s?

For verification of the teacher preparation (or licensure) program, submit your form to Karen Donovan, Licensure Coordinator, Graduate Education Department. (kdonovan@smcvt.edu, 802.654.2826).

  10. I have several years’ experience of teaching ESL but no coursework. Do I really need to take the whole Licensure program?

The State has an alternative route to licensure for experienced teachers. For more about the “Peer Review” process, contact the State of Vermont at licensing@doe.state.vt.us or 802.828.2445.

  11. I’m an international student. Can I take the Licensure program?

Yes, but only if you have residency and permission to work in the US.
TOEFL requirements may apply. The teacher license will not entitle you to a work permit.
