M.Ed. Concentrations

Completion of course and credit requirements

Required courses and electives are listed under each M.Ed. concentration on the left: Arts, Curriculum, Information Technology, Reading, School Leadership and Special Education.

Writing Assessment

Students must show proficiency in writing. Students' writing will be assessed through their written assignments in GED 558: Introduction to Educational Research and GED 516: Decision to Teach. Students whose writing does not meet the department's standards by the end of GED 558 or GED 516 will take GED 604: Teacher Writing, Writing Teachers. Writing proficiency must be demonstrated before acceptance to Candidacy and student teaching.

Candidacy and Transfer of Credit 

After taking six credits, but prior to the completion of 12 credits, all students must achieve Candidacy. With an advisor, the student fills must apply for Candidacy. When you do, you will list your courses taken, courses proposed, and a "Statement of Goals." Up to six graduate credits may be transferred from another institution with the Academic Advisor’s approval.

Thesis or Capstone

All M.Ed. students who have not taken an approved educational research class are required to take GED 558 Introduction to Educational Research. To waive this requirement, a written request including course syllabus or other documentation should be submitted to the Director of Graduate Programs in Education. GED 699 Capstone Seminar in Graduate Education or GED 562 Thesis Research is required of all students.
