An ESL Teacher Licensure program is available in conjunction with the master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MATESOL) program. The ESL Licensure program of study prepares successful candidates to teach ESL in the public schools of Vermont at the PreK-Grade 6, Grades 7-12, or PreK-Grade 12 levels. This program is approved by the Vermont Department of Education. Students in the MATESOL program must also be accepted into the Graduate Education Licensure Programs. Contact your MATESOL advisor for details.
Course Requirements
There are 14 required courses for a total of 49 credits that you will need to take for the ESL PK-12 Initial Licensure Programs. These courses with their corresponding course descriptions are listed in our Graduate Catalogue under Licensure: English to Speakers of Other Languages and there is a recommended sequence of courses for 2007-2009 and for 2008-2010.
There is also a portfolio required. For details on the portfolio, contact the Graduate Education Program Director, Dr. Anne Judson, ajudson@smcvt.edu, 802.654.2611.
Currently many states have a license reciprocity agreement with Vermont. Their specific requirements, however, are always subject to change. For updated information on the State of Vermont Board of Education Licensing Information, visit http://www.state.vt.us/educ/new/html/maincert.html
If you intend to teach outside Vermont after obtaining your Vermont license, you should first contact the relevant state to verify reciprocity and establish exactly what you will need in order to obtain a license in that state.
