Seminar Focus
To be a mystic is to touch and be touched by the Ground of Being - in one or more, or all, of its aspects, especially power and tremendousness, all-knowledge, and love. Such experience is usually either preceded or followed, or both, by radical modification of the ego. At the same time, the ego must not be entirely disabled if the experience is to be of maximum benefit both to the mystic and to others.
This course looks at a range of experiences that may or may not properly be considered mystical, with an interest in both what is afterwards communicated to other people and how it is communicated. The subject of mystical experience is beset by differences among the vocabularies and value systems of various cultural traditions (religion, arts, psychology, among others) that have an interest in it. Exploring some of these crucial differences in vocabulary and perspective, and even simply identifying some of the interested traditions, will be part of the work of the seminar. The focus will remain, however, throughout, on the mystical experience itself, and on the extraordinary power of such experience to move and transform—even those who encounter it only at second-hand.”
Optional Credit available for qualified participants. Please contact Dr. Edward Mahoney.
