ESL Licensure and Endorsement Programs

ESL Licensure Program (49 credits)

Students accepted in the Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MATESOL) Program may wish to concurrently pursue the ESL Licensure Program. The Program, administered by the Graduate Education Department, prepares graduates to teach ESL in public schools in Vermont at the PreK-Grade 6, Grades 7-12, or PreK- Grade 12 levels. The Program integrates practical coursework and experience with methodologies appropriate for working with elementary, middle, and high school students. Without the ESL License, MATESOL graduates are not certified to teach in public schools. A portfolio is required. Documentation of a second language learning experience is also required.

Acceptance to the MATESOL degree program does not automatically mean acceptance to the ESL Licensure program. As soon as you have been accepted to the MATESOL degree program, you must apply separately to the Graduate Education Licensure Program. Please click here for the required application form.

Currently many states have a license reciprocity agreement with Vermont. Their specific requirements, however, are always subject to change. If you intend to teach outside Vermont after obtaining your Vermont license, you should first contact the relevant state to verify reciprocity and establish exactly what you will need in order to obtain a license in that state.

Please see the Graduate Education Licensure Programs, English as a Second Language, for complete course requirements.
