Teacher Education Program

The VCLA Teacher Education Program, funded by a five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of English Language Acquisition, provides 90% tuition assistance and on-line/hybrid courses to licensed K-12 teachers interested in obtaining an ESL license endorsement. One group of nine teachers will soon finish their endorsement courses. This opportunity to join our second, and final, cohort will be offered to eleven teachers.

These newly-ESL-endorsed content area teachers will apply their new knowledge to improve the academic achievement and language and literacy development of their English Language Learners, and to provide content instruction aligned with state GEs as well as the state English Language Proficiency Standards.

The VCLA Teacher Education Program:

1) 90% tuition support for K-12 ESL license endorsement courses

2) 11 teachers to be selected for 2-year period (Summer 07-Spring 09)

3) 18 graduate credits over 2 years

4) Approximate tuition cost to School District or teacher = $1500/teacher over 2 years, which may include access fees for online courses.

5) Summer courses at St. Michael’s College (3 weeks) followed by one on-line/hybrid course per semester during the school year. (A hybrid course may include Saturday meetings over the semester.)

6) Coursework begins this summer, with an intensive 10-day course, 6/25-7/7.
