Helpdesk
The Helpdesk, located in St. Edmunds 221C, is staffed for walk-ins, phone appointments, and via email (ithelp@smcvt.edu) Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during the academic year. The Helpdesk maintains the College's computer fleet and assists the community with password management, computer registration, and other computer-related issues.
Specialized Lab Management
The four digital media labs, the Faculty Development Lab, and the Language Learning Resource Center are all hands-on managed labs, regularly maintained and updated by their respective lab managers.
eCollege
eCollege is the College's course management system, and is managed by a Technology Learning Center staff person. All faculty and students have access to eCollege once they have registered for courses.
Project Consultation
TLC staff are available to consult with faculty on ways to integrate technology tools into their class projects.
In the past ten years, the team has presented a variety of workshop topics on such far-ranging subjects as classroom presentation equipment, blogging, file management, eCollege and operating systems. These small group workshops are provided both during the summer and throughout the academic year, and registration is usually required. Workshops are generally announced through email.
Student Workshops
In collaboration with the Career Center, the TLC group presents popular student workshops on such topics as Excel and Powerpoint. These workshops are geared especially for students, and may be requested by contacting the Technology Learning Center at x2020.
Teaching with Technology Workshops (TWTW)
TLC has offered a week-long, intensive summer workshop each year. The workshop is limited to ten participants and a faculty mentor, and provides instruction on various facets of technology. Almost 2/3 of our regular faculty members have attended this workshop since its inception in 2002, and evaluations have been consistently positive. During the workshop, participants learn to integrate technology into their teaching through hands-on experience, IT staff support, and collegial sharing of expertise. Next year’s summer workshop date and topic will be announced in early December.
Faculty Development Lab (Jeanmarie 286)
Faculty members and their support staff will find a great resource in Jeanmarie 286, the Faculty Development Lab. The lab contains multimedia PCs, a Macintosh, and a number of peripherals, including slide and high-speed document scanners. Specialized software and other equipment in the lab help users accomplish both simple and complicated digital projects. Digital cameras are available for loan from this lab, as are web cams and Tegrity recording equipment. An on-site instructional technologist is available for hands-on support, training, and guidance during normal working hours, although an appointment is recommended for lengthy projects. This lab is intended solely for the use of faculty members and their immediate support staff – students may not use this lab. For more information, call 654-2983.
Language Learning Resource Center
For language teachers and others interested in language technology, the LLRC is a great place to find help. From researching the web to providing training for faculty and students, the staff of the LLRC helps integrate technology into the classroom. “Boom boxes”, iRiver pods, foreign and domestic DVDs, language learning software, and headsets are all available for faculty loan from this lab.
Student Employment
The Technology Learning Center employs and trains about 50 students per year in its various areas. For more information about working in the TLC, please contact the Helpdesk manager.
New Faculty Orientation
A short orientation is offered at the beginning of the Fall semester to new faculty members (current faculty members are also welcome to this orientation). The orientation includes a general overview of IT and an opportunity to ask questions about IT at SMC.
Media Services
Media Services provides maintenance and assistance to the classrooms, and setup and assistance to special events being held on campus on nights and weekends. For classroom assistance, just dial x1919.
Presentation Capture
The College owns a site license for Tegrity, a presentation capture system. Although there are no cameras installed in the classrooms, the Faculty Development Lab (JE 286) loans out "Tegrity Kits", with everything needed to record a lecture or event and make it available online. We highly recommend that anyone who has not used Tegrity in the past make an appointment with the TLC to learn the basics. Please call x2983 for more information.
Student Response Systems
If you need to use a "clicker" response system, there are several options. Please contact us to find out which will work best for you!
Web assistance
There are several supported levels of web applications that can be used to create and maintain a website, as well as blogging tools to create an interactive site. Contact the TLC at x2763 for more information.
Web conferencing
TLC staff support the use of Skype in the classroom, and are available for consultation and training with this application. Please contact either x1919 or x2878 for more information.
