General Information - Overview

The Durick Library is designed to meet the academic needs of students, providing access to scholarly information resources online and in print.  It serves as an academic work space for research, study, group collaboration, writing, and project development.  The library provides an online research area, assistance from reference librarians and circulation staff, ample seating, two computer labs and spaces conducive to individual and group study.  Seating capacity totals over 500, with 50 private study carrels.  The SMC wireless network is available throughout the building.

The Library's collections include 275,000 book and periodical volumes, access to articles from over 60,000 online journals, over 10,000 electronic books, course reserves, and thousands of other materials including primary source materials, maps, videos, and other items. A wide variety of online resources include 130 research databases, multimedia databases, and software applications. Most electronic resources are accessible through the Library website

The Durick Library is open 105 hours per week while classes are in session, with extended service during the last week of classes and the week of final exams. Reference librarians are available during most of these hours. Most online resources, including the library catalog and research databases are available 24 hours per day.

Books, articles, and other information resources not found in the Library’s collections are available to students through participation in national and regional computer networks. An online Interlibrary Loan request form is available to submit requests. Saint Michael’s also has reciprocal borrowing agreements with most of the other Vermont academic institutions.

The Library provides courses and workshops for students in the utilization of technology and information resources. These offerings include LS101 Research Skills and Strategies as well as non-credit workshops and individual tutoring.

The College Archives, located in the Durick Library, is the designated repository for official records of Saint Michael’s College and the Society of Saint Edmund. The collection includes official records and manuscripts; student records; College publications; administrative papers; video and audio recordings; microfilm; and photographs relating to the history of the College and the Society of Saint Edmund.
