Policies - Mediated Online Searches

Saint Michael's Library maintains subscriptions to pay-per-search database services to support student, staff and faculty research. Mediated online searches of these databases will be performed by a librarian in consultation with the patron. These pay-per-search databases are utilized when other resources are not productive or useful for a search topic.

To the extent that it is able, the college subsidizes searches that are requested by current faculty, staff and students and that are related to research, course work, instruction, or college business projects. Searches requested by anyone else or searches that are not related to instruction, research, or college business are charged at 100% cost of the search plus a $25.00 consultation fee.

Selection of databases will be determined by the librarian in consultation with the patron. Furthermore, it will be a standard procedure for the librarian and patron to first utilize print, CD-ROM and Internet resources before using the subscription services.

Contact a reference librarian to determine what resources are available and appropriate for a particular research project. Please keep in mind that the librarian may need time to prepare adequately for the search and may require 48 hours or more to complete the research.
