Instructions for Connecting to the Library Wireless Network
Troubleshooting tips:
Can I access it anywhere in the library? Yes.
Do I have to be right under an antenna for it to work? No. The antennae were placed at regular intervals so the fields overlap. There should be continuous coverage. But the closer you are to an antenna, the faster the connection will be.
Can I access it from outside the building, like on the front steps or the lawn? You can access it outside the building, but the signal is weak. The power from the antennae was set to keep the network within the walls.
How fast is the connection? The speed varies according to your distance from an antenna. The closer you are to an antenna, the faster the connection. The farther you are from one, the slower it will be. Also, speed varies with how many people are using the network as a whole and with how many people are accessing a particular antenna. If you are experiencing a slow connection, and several people are accessing the same antenna as you, then try moving to one being accessed by fewer people.
Do I need an account to access it? No. If you have a MIKENET account, then you'll have access to MIKENET resources, including network drives like the Z: drive. If you do not have a MIKENET account, then your access will be limited to the Internet.
Is it secure? It is secure for college-owned computers but not for students or guests. Making it secure for all would require a much more difficult configuration for each computer.
Are all the library computers now wireless? No. The computers in public areas, faculty and staff offices, and computer labs still connect to the network through a cable plugged into a wall jack.
Can I take my laptop to Information Technology to have it configured for the wireless network? Information Technology prefers that you follow the instructions and try to do it yourself first. If you have followed the instructions, and if you still experience problems, then please call x2020 or stop by the HelpDesk in Room 221 in Saint Edmund’s
