History
This collection is made up of both personal files and official personnel files of the Society of Saint Edmund. There are not files for all members of the Society, especially the earliest members. For the earliest members, files usually brief biographical information. Beginning in the early 20th century, the General Administration of the Society began keeping more extensive files on personnel. These files often include biographical material, paperwork related to entrance into the Society, some academic records and some correspondence, usually personal. Records also usually include files detailing the individual's work within the Society through the years. While most files are simply the files kept by the General Administration, some also include personal papers that were moved to the Generalate upon death and then interfiled with the official personnel files.
Scope and Contents
Materials are arranged into three series: Deceased, Withdrawals, Aspirants. The Deceased series includes files of fully professed members of the Society. The withdrawal series includes records of fully professed members of the Society who later withdrew from the Society. The aspirants series includes records of men who were affiliated with the Society with the intent of professing vows, but who did not. All files are arranged chronologically according to the year of death or withdrawal from the Society. The General Administration of the Society usually transfers records within a year of a members death or withdrawal.
