History
The Superior General of the Society of Saint Edmund occasionally appoints Directors to head up aspects of Society business, both spiritual and temporal. The role of the director is to guide the program or area for which he has responsibility. Many of the Directors were responsible for one or more stages of Edmundite formation. According to the Constitutions of the Society, the Superior General must appoint a director for each stage of formation. A person may serve as director for more than one stage of formation.
Scope
Arranged into series by office.
Archives (1977-1991)
The Society first established archives in 1974, noting that Vatican II included a reminder to religious communities of the importance of their heritage. The Superior General appointed a member of the society to act as archivist. Members have undertaken this role through the years, although a layperson, Joseph Constance, did a significant amount of work in the archives from 1974-1985. Most of these directors did not work in a full time capacity. In 2001, the Society hired a full time archivist through a unique arrangement with Saint Michael’s College. Since this time, the archivist has not held the title of Director, and their records are not included in this series. Material is arranged alphabetically.

Communications 1962-1995, bulk 1989-1995
Beginning in the 1960’s, the Superior General appointed a member of the Society to act as the Communications Director. In the early years, the Communications Director was primarily responsible for public relations and press releases. By the 1980’s though, this job had evolved and the director served a broader role in marketing the society. One of their largest and most innovative tasks was development of Common Life, a magazine overseen by the Communications Director. The bulk of this series is related to publication of Common Life. Other material includes records from the various directors and materials from various publication and materials put out by their office.

Edmundite Youth Programs (1977)
The Edmundite Youth program Director worked with the SSE Committee on Youth, which was formed to study the manner in which Edmundites could work with and promote Christian activities among teens and pre-teens. The Society worked with youth as both a public service and a way of increasing vocations. Eventually, individuals and apostolates began to undertake independent projects that fulfilled the mission of the committee, and the committee and the directorship were phased out.
